Description

Shewanella are facultatively anaerobic, Gram-negative bacteria, motile by polar flagella, rod-like, and generally associated with aquatic or marine environments. They are capable of using a variety of compounds as electron acceptors, including oxygen, iron, manganese, uranium, nitrate, nitrite, fumarate, to name but a few. This ability makes Shewanella important for bioremediation of contaminated metals and radioactive wastes. The genus Shewanella comprises 36 recognized and hundreds of uncharacterized cultivable species. Shewanella baltica, isolated from the Baltic Sea, is able to grow at 4 degrees C but not 37, unlike other Shewanella species. Under anaerobic conditions, oxidation of organic matter can be coupled to the reduction of nitrate, Fe(III) and sulfur compounds. OS155 is unable to produce an FeS precipitate on TSI agar medium, whereas OS195 can do so. OS155 does not produce N-acetyl-b-glucosaminidase, or chymotrypsin. It can use gentiobiose, cellobiose, sucrose, d-gluconate and citrate but not glycogen, malate or dextrin as sole sources of carbon and energy. OS195 can also use these latter three substrates (based on PubMed 9542087). (HAMAP: SHEB5)
