Streptococcus macedonicus is a Gram-positive, spherical-shaped bacterium that thrives in a mesophilic temperature range, between 25°C and 40°C. As a chemoheterotroph, it obtains its energy by breaking down organic compounds and using them as a source of carbon and energy. This microbe is a facultative anaerobe, meaning it can survive in the presence or absence of oxygen, although it grows more optimally in aerobic conditions. As a Streptococcus species, S. macedonicus is found in various body sites, including the oral cavity, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, female genital tract, and skin. It is ubiquitous in all species, with the highest frequencies found in humans and primates.
