This bacterium is a heterotroph, meaning it obtains its energy by breaking down complex organic molecules, specifically using a combination of fermentation and respiration to produce energy. As a facultative anaerobe, S. carnosus can tolerate the presence of oxygen, growing optimally in aerobic conditions, but can also survive in the absence of oxygen.
