Description

Synechocystiae are unicellular, photoautotrophic, facultative glucose-heterotrophic cyanobacteria. They are oxygenic photosynthetic with two photosystems at their disposal, similar to those in algae and plants, and they can fix nitrogen.Nodule formation (on the stem or the root of the plant) is the result of tissue proliferation induced by the rhizobia via growth promoters (e.g., cytokines) enabling the plant to convert gaseous nitrogen into combined nitrogen. This fixation process leads to significant increases in combined nitrogen in the soil.(From http://www.ebi.ac.uk/2can/genomes/bacteria.html) (BacMap)
