Bordetella pertussis is a gram-negative, coccoid-shaped bacterium, classified as a mesophilic chemoheterotroph and a strict aerobe. This pathogen is primarily known for causing whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory disease predominantly affecting children.Bordetella pertussis possesses a unique morphology that allows it to adhere to the ciliated epithelial cells of the upper respiratory tract, facilitating its role as a pathogenic agent.
