Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that thrives at mesophilic temperatures, classifying it as a facultative anaerobe and a chemoheterotroph. This microbe is capable of surviving in various body sites across multiple species, including the gastrointestinal tracts of mammals, birds, reptiles, and even humans, highlighting its ecological versatility. As a Gram-negative organism, S. Typhimurium possesses a thin peptidoglycan layer surrounded by an outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharides, which can contribute to its virulence and ability to evade the host immune response.
